How do you define integrity?

Posted on Jan 7th, 2008 by dharmaRN : lovingkindness dharmaRN
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for January 07, 2008:

Integrity means wholeness, a hologram of one's beliefs, speech, actions, feelings, thoughts, values, deeds, decisions, et al........each piece reflecting sincerity and  compatability with all other pieces that form the whole. Gandhi said happiness is what we experience when, "what we believe, say, think, feel and do are in harmony." So, integrity means, literally, being the quality of integrated: that the pieces or parts or aspects of who I am today, in this moment, are in harmony. That the internal and external, the visible and unseen parts of you or me or anyone are woven together, integrated into the whole of who we are at that moment. Integrated me (or you) is balanced, at peace, congruent, flowing effortlessly along...... Non-integrated me is what I experience when I believe one action to be just, but choose another; or when I say something not true to my beliefs/values, or when I rationalize false thoughts......in these examples, one aspect of my being is detaching from, or being allowed to wander off from the otherwise integrated whole. Why or how does this happen? FEAR can be pretty effective at dis-integrating our being-ness......Fear of what someone will think of me, fear of having ideas rejected, fear of getting close or attached, fear of losing someone/something....... all of which are false concepts anyway......So, yeah, Integrity is wholeness in our being-ness........... we know when that wholeness is there, because we are without inner or outer conflict.  Likewise, conflict with self or other signals that aspects of our being-ness (thinking eight-fold path here) are dis-integrated, and the remedy is to return to right action, right thought, right speech, right vocation, right view, right intention, right effort, right mindfulness. To live the quality of integrated aspects of being-ness is to be with integrity.
